  4.     Eden Pastora, the perennial Nicaraguan maverick, returned
  5. to Managua last week in a homecoming more quixotic than heroic.
  6. The charismatic former guerrilla will campaign for dark-horse
  7. Social Christian presidential candidate Erick Ramirez, touting
  8. him as an alternative to both the Marxist Sandinistas and the
  9. National Opposition Union, a coalition dominated by the right
  10. wing.

  12.     Under the nom de guerre Commander Zero, Pastora became a
  13. revolutionary superstar in 1978 after leading a raid on the
  14. National Palace that helped topple the Somoza regime a year
  15. later. Partly because he was unhappy with the Sandinistas'
  16. growing dependence on Moscow, he quit as Vice Minister of
  17. Defense and in 1983 launched a guerrilla war against his former
  18. comrades. But he rejected CIA pressure to join the main contra
  19. faction and was finally forced to quit fighting.

  21.     Pastora can dazzle audiences, but he is not a candidate.
  22. His stumping for Ramirez will probably split opposition votes,
  23. which is one reason the Sandinistas let Pastora return in the
  24. first place.
